Fall asleep and stay asleep with these tips

Waking up in the middle of the night is a disorienting experience. Even though you had no problem falling asleep, after just a few hours in bed, you find yourself wide awake with a bowl of cereal, suffering through late-night television.

It’s not fun.

That’s why we put together these seven tips to help you stay asleep so you won’t wake up and have to struggle to go back to sleep.

  1. Avoid alcohol before bed. A nightcap might help you fall asleep, but it can also wake you up after a few hours of sleep.
  2. Avoid caffeine after 2 p.m. This goes for other stimulants as well, such as sugar. Remember, chocolate has caffeine, too!
  3. Get into a relaxing routine before going to bed. Meditate, read, and most of all, avoid anything that might cause emotional stress.
  4. Don’t go to bed after a big meal. Give yourself time to digest; it helps with sleep.
  5. Set a schedule. Putting yourself into a regular sleep routine will establish a rhythm that, in time, will make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  6. Exercise. Even just half an hour of light walking can make the difference between being well-rested or feeling exhausted.
  7. Cut down on liquids before bed. Drinking less before bed will reduce the likelihood of having to get up to use the bathroom.

Make these good habits a part of your regular sleep routine to fall asleep faster and sleep better each night. Sleep better to live better!
