Many studies have determined that regular exercise has a positive impact on sleep quality. But, what is the best time to exercise? Should one exercise before they sleep? The answer is not cut and dry.

Chris Colwell, Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry and bio-behavioral sciences at the University of California, says that, “Light exercise and stretching before bed are probably a good thing.” However, it’s not a smart idea to attempt breaking your fastest mile record right before hitting the sack. Colwell does not recommend a heavy cardio workout within an hour or two before.

Considering everyones bodies are different, Dr. Colwell mentions how going for an evening jog may help some people get right to sleep. “If this works for them, no reason to change. Others will do the same workout and not be able to sleep,” he said. At the end of the day, it comes down to understanding how your body works, and forming a schedule for exercise and sleep around that.
