If you’re in a relationship currently, what are your thoughts on it? Are you an extrovert who is closer than ever, or is there a rift in communication? Your sleeping position may reveal more than just how you like to sleep, it could reveal insight to your personality and your relationship with your partner.

1,000 people participated in a survey that asked questions about their preferred sleeping positions, their relationship quality, and their own personalities, which found that the further apart people slept from their partners, the more likely they were to poorly rate their relationship.

94% of the couples who touched each other as they slept stated that they were happy with their relationships, compared to the 68% of couples who didn’t touch each other as they slept and rated their relationship as a happy one.

Richard Wiseman, who is a psychology professor at the University of Hertfordshire in England, and led the study, further discussed his findings at the Edinburgh International Science Festival in Scotland, as he believes that sleep can give us critical insight about our waking lives.

“This work suggests that if you have noticed that you are drifting apart from your partner during the night, you might want to take a look at the quality of your relationship,” Wiseman told Live Science.

Additional findings about the couples revealed that 42% of them slept with their backs to each other, 31% slept facing the same direction, and just 4% of couples rested toward each other. Interestingly, 12% of the couples slept less an inch apart, with 2% sleeping more than 30 inches away from each other.

The great thing about the study is that scientists are able to demonstrate that sleep isn’t simply a time where nothing happens. It provides insight into our consciousness, who we are as people and how we really feel about those around us. How do you feel about Wiseman’s study; think there may be some truth to it?
