While sleep is often studied as a solitary act, most people share their beds with a partner. Whether you are dating, in a committed relationship or married, sleep plays a huge role and can give some insight to how you feel about each other.

Last year, researchers at the University of Hertfordshire analyzed 1,ooo people regarding their sleeping positions, sleep quality and personality for incite on how couples are sleeping and what it could mean for their relationship:

Here is what they found:

-42% of couples sleep back to back (most popular)
– 4% sleep facing each other
-31% sleep facing the same direction
-12% sleep less than an inch away
-2% sleep more than 30 inches away
-94% of couples who sleep touching each other said that they were happy
-68% of couples who did not touch or spoon while sleeping said they are satisfied with their relationship.

If you are in a new relationship, you should be also take note that being madly in love has been associated with a lack of sleep.

Filled with passion, those sleepless nights and energetic days aren’t just a figment of your imagination. Being in love and spending time with your partner reduces the level of the stress hormone cortisol in your body, while increasing vasopressin and oxytocin, making you happy and addicted to seeing the new love of your life.

However, don’t be too worried about your sleep deprivation during this time. One study in 2007 found that people who are intensely in love do sleep less, but the short amount of snooze they manage to collect is very high-quality.

While both the quality and quantity of sleep decrease with each decade, falling in love can happen at any age, providing a boost of happiness and the benefits of sleeping with a partner.
