How many times did you hit the snooze button this morning? The reason why you feel the need to repeatedly try to get more sleep each morning shouldn’t be overlooked. This bad habit is often a sign of poor sleep quality and can lead to daytime sleepiness.

According to The Huffington Post, fragmented sleep is worse than getting no sleep at all. When you promptly hit the snooze button, you are disturbing the stage of sleep you are in. If you happen to be in REM sleep during this time, it can lead to not being able to process and recall emotionally charged memories from the previous day. Fragmented sleep is linked to moodiness, cognitive issues, and an inability to fully pay attention.

Recognizing the signs that you are simply not getting enough sleep will curb your desire to hit the snooze button. Set yourself up for success by going to bed 30 minutes earlier than your standard bedtime. Also, don’t forget to stay away from all devices that emit blue light including, your, iPad, television and smartphone. Blue light hinders melatonin production which causes a build up early in morning, making you feel sleepier.

Other approaches to use in your battle with the snooze button are placing your alarm clock out of reach, using an alarm clock that emits increasing amounts of light, setting the temperature to increase closer to it’s time for you to wake up and setting your coffee maker early so you can smell it when you wake up.

Using the snooze button can be a setback for your energy during the day, leading to increased caffeine consumption which in turn prevents you from getting more sleep and hitting the snooze button again. Beat the cycle by making sure you get the 7-9 hours of sleep you need every single night!
