If you find that you are having trouble sleeping, your very own pillow might be to blame. When it comes to sleep, small changes can go a long way toward big improvements. Possible pillow problems:

Your pillow is a decade old: While some things may get better with age such as wine and jeans, your pillow is not on that list. Don’t give spores and dust mites a place to live; this can lead to classic allergy symptoms such as congestion, itchy eyes, sneezing and coughing that will prevent you from sleeping. Pillows can be washed, but it is recommended that they be replaced every year.

Your head is positioned too high: If you pillow is too thick or you are fond of stacking pillows to raise your head, it may cause neck, shoulder, and back pain, as well as headaches. In choosing a pillow that will allow your head to be in line with your spine, follow this rule of thumb: don’t raise your head higher than your heart.

Pillows can make you snore: When we sleep on our backs, we are more susceptible to snoring, which can diminish our sleep quality, and our partner’s. To prevent snoring, try training yourself to sleep on your side by using a body pillow. If you must sleep on your back, use a fluffier pillow to slightly prop up your head.

Down isn’t always the best option: If you happen to be allergic to down feathers, the luxury appeal of down pillows will quickly fade. Switch over to down-alternative pillows for the same luxury feel without having to deal with congestion or a runny nose.
