How to Protect Your Snooze Against Allergies

While the beauty of spring season doesn’t go unnoticed with blooming flowers and warmer weather, neither does the increase of allergens in the air. Allergy season can easily diminish your sleep quality due unpleasant symptoms that can cause nighttime awakenings. To sleep your best this season, check out these tips from The Huffington Post:

1. Regularly wash your sheets:
During allergy season, it’s even more critical to wash or replace your sheets more than once every 10 days to protect your snooze from being disturbed by dead skin, pollen and dust mites. Aim to change your sheets at least once a week, as well as vacuum carpets and fabric curtains.

2. Invest in a dehumidifier: The warm, moist air during spring is a breeding ground for mold, mildew, dust mites, and bacteria that trigger allergies. Sleeping with a dehumidifier will keep the moisture in the air low in your bedroom to keep allergens and mold away.

3. Kick pets out of your bed: While we may love our furry friends, their fur is a magnet for dirt, pollen, and dust, which will only make it harder to sleep at night.

4. Shower at night: Wash off all of the invisible allergens you’ve collected throughout the day to prevent them from irritating your lungs, eyes and nasal passages. The steam from a hot shower will also help you breathe easier.

5. Skip the nightcap: Alcohol not only leads to poor sleep quality with frequent nighttime awakenings, but if you are sick with symptoms like coughing, sneezing, and itching, you’ll be even more uncomfortable throughout the night.

6. Replace your mattress and pillows: As pillows and mattresses age, the more sweat, dead skin, body oils and dust get trapped inside of them. Replace mattresses every 5 to 10 years and pillows every 6 months to keep you nighttime exposure to allergens low.

Maintaining high quality sleep throughout the year can be a challenge as we adapt not only to weather changes, but the many events in our lives. Just remember to stay consistent and keep making the effort to sleep your best; you deserve to reap all of the benefits a good night’s rest brings.
