Narcolepsy: a Brief Explanation

Narcolepsy: a Brief Explanation

Narcolepsy, as it is characterized in movies, consists of people falling asleep at inopportune times. For example, one minute Bob is enjoying a plate of spaghetti and the next, he’s face down in it snoring. While this may seem comical, narcolepsy is a very real sleep disorder that affects about 1 out of every 3,000 Americans.

For most people, our brains know when to go to sleep, and when to be awake. While the person who works third shift’s schedule is different than that of someone working a 9-5, they both have schedules—and the brain follows suit.

This is not the case for individuals with narcolepsy. Their brains do not regulate sleep cycles in the traditional manner. Instead, narcoleptics are often overcome by the necessity to sleep; and they will do so on the spot. Wherever that may be. For how long they sleep varies—a few minutes, or merely seconds. This also spills over into their nightlife. While most of us are catching Zs in preparation for work the next day, those with narcolepsy may not be getting a full night’s sleep, and wake up a lot.

As far as its origins, scientists are not exactly sure what causes narcolepsy. What they do know is that it occurs when there is a significant deficiency of hypocretin, a neurotransmitter that regulates alertness.

Symptoms of narcolepsy frequently include:

Excessive daytime sleepiness: Narcoleptics are often very tired throughout the day, making it difficult for them to complete everyday activities.

Cataplexy: Cataplexy is the sudden loss of control over one’s muscles. It is frequently manifested as a feeling of weakness for a few moments. Other times, it can lead to the affected person collapsing all together.

Disrupted sleep: Not surprisingly, narcoleptic typically do not have an issue falling asleep. However, because of their brain’ struggle with maintaining a sleep schedule, they often wake up during the night.

If you have experience any of these symptoms, discuss them with your doctor. Getting the best sleep you can is non-negotiable when it comes to your well being!
