Employees who have offices with windows sleep longer at night, have a higher quality of sleep, are more active during the day and have a higher quality of life.

Experts have known that exposure to light helps regulate your circadian rhythm, (your sleep and wake cycle) and improves your mood, productivity and general health, but that most indoor light is not bright enough to affect your circadian rhythm.

In one study, workers with windows received 173 percent more white light exposure while at work than workers without. They also slept on average 46 minutes more a night, and had better scores for general sleep quality.

For better productivity, sleep experts believe that the architectural design of offices should be altered so that employees can have ample amount of natural light, since we now know that light exposure affects individuals not only during work but through out the day.

If natural light is unavailable to you during your work hours, try adding fluorescent lighting around your office or desk. Take walks outside during the day, particularly during the morning when light is most important for your circadian rhythm.
