More often than not, when someone complains about not being able to sleep to a doctor, a sleeping pill is prescribed. During medical school, various subjects such as anatomy, pathology molecular biology, and pharmacology are limiting time spent on sleep education.
A study in the Sleep Medicine sleep journal showed that medical students on average only receive two and a half hours of sleep education during medical school. 27% of the respondents to the study reported receiving no training at all. It is well known and well documented that poor quality and quantity of sleep is linked to increased rates of cancer, sudden death, and motor vehicle accidents. Unfortunately, many physicians and surgeons do not take sleep very seriously.
