How much can you really tell about a person based on their sleep preferences? A recent study suggests that our sleep habits may have a linked to our personality traits. Night owls may be more villainous than people who are early birds.

Published in the journal of Personal and Individual Differences, the study conducted by researchers at Liverpool University and the University of Western Sydney, found that people who have a naturally inclination for night-time hours were more likely to have traits of the “Dark Triad.”

The Dark Triad is a group of characteristics that includes narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism (indicative of being manipulative). The tendency to seek admiration, be insensitive, impulsive are also associated with this group. On the bright side, these people often possess qualities that people find attractive such as being physically attractive, charming and achievement-oriented.

The study included 263 college students, 74 of whom were males, who answered a questionnaire online about their morning/evening preferences. Questions were also asked that would determine their narcissistic, psychopathic and Machiavellianistic tendencies.

A correlation was found between having Dark Triad traits and being naturally being an evening person. There was no association found between the sex of the participants and Dark Triad traits and having an evening preference.

While the findings are fascinating, there was a weakness in using college students because their sleep habits are often very different from other members of society. It is always interesting to see what researchers may find out next about sleep. Do you think your sleep habits reveal things about your personality?
