According to a new study from the University of Southern Denmark, there is a correlation between poor sleep quality and a lower relative sperm count. The participants in the study were almost a thousand young men between their late teens and early twenties.

The research surrounding the study included a questionnaire that asked participants how frequently they experienced poor sleep, if they often woke up at night and had trouble getting back to sleep, and how often they had trouble getting to sleep. The men who reported experiencing these sleep troubles produced a sperm count 25% lower than their peers who slept healthily. Furthermore, these men with lower sperms counts were also found to have smaller testicles. The results of the study, which was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, said, “This is the first study to relate sleep disturbances to semen quality. Men with a poor sleep score had poorer semen quality and smaller testicles.”

The researchers also made clear that those who had difficulty sleeping also have a higher propensity to smoke, consume high amounts of alcohol, and have a poor diet.

Be sure to get the 7-9 hours of sleep a night recommended for adults by the National Sleep Foundation. A lack of sleep doesn’t just contribute to a lower sperm count but also, a higher risk for obesity, heart disease, cancer, and many more other serious health issues. The right amount of sleep also gives us a better attitude. Make every night of sleep a success!
