Sleep apnea has been linked to a number of health issues such as brain tumors, and an increased risk for cancer later on in life, according to a new study.  Huang Chun-hao, who is the director of the sleep center at Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital in Chiayi County, Taiwain, China, began the study over ten years ago, in 2000.

He came to his conclusions by observing the health of 112,555 people with sleep apnea, and 112,555 without the sleep disorder. Some, but not all of the people examined, were observed for up to 10 years.

By the time he finished his study he had drawn some very compelling relationships between sleep apnea and other medical conditions. For example, those that suffered from sleep apnea were 1.47 times more likely to be afflicted with malignant brain tumors than their counterparts who did not. Colon adenomas were also much more prevalent in those that had sleep apnea.

Chun-hao spoke in particular about how sleep apnea and snoring can lead to a lack of necessary oxygen in our bodies. This, he said, leads to a risk of the sufferer being at a higher risk for many forms of cancer.
