Study: Sleep Linked To Better Test Scores For Students

How do you feel after a great night of sleep? According to The Huffington Post, research suggests that not only does sleep play a role in how you feel, but how well you perform academically.

Researchers in Belgium from KU Leuven and Ghent universities, teamed up to interview 621 college freshmen about their sleep habits around exam time. Afterwards, the survey results were compared to their exam results, with each freshmen’s study habits as well as socioeconomic and health being accounted for.

The freshmen who were getting 7 hours of sleep each night during exam time earned grades that were almost 10% higher than the students who slept less. When the freshmen increased their sleep from 6 hours to 7 hours each night, the researchers found an increase of 1.7 points on a scale of 20, on each exam the freshmen took.

Sleep may boost academic results because of the fact high-quality sleep also improves our cognitive abilities, allowing us to remember more information and easily learn new skills. If you have a big test coming up, need to be more creative or have a huge work project to accomplish, allow 7-9 hours of sleep each night to do its job.
