What’s the Best Thing to Sleep in for Better Health?

According to an international study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, 1 in 3 adults sleep in the nude, a habit which brings along big benefits.

The Daily Mail took the time to ask sleep experts how and why ditching pajamas can boost your sleep, shrink your waistline, and decrease serious health risks.

When it comes to snooze, sleep experts all agree that keeping your body cool throughout the night leads to higher quality sleep, as your core temperature needs to drop about half a degree for you to actually fall sleep.

Since your brain is sending messages to your blood vessels to release heat, anything that hinders that release will keep you tossing and turning. Sleeping in the nude makes it easier for your body to do its job, and locks in the time you need in a deep sleep, the sleep stage associated with memory consolidation, the production of growth hormones and cell repair and growth.

While you don’t want to get too hot at night, you should keep your hands and feet warm. For your core body temperature to decrease, it has to release excess heat through your skin, more specifically though your hands and feet. When they are too cold, your blood vessels close near the surface of your skin, keeping heat from escaping. Since circulation problems become more common as we age, this explains one of the reasons why it’s harder to collect nightly snooze as a senior. Add in socks to your nightly sleepwear to really get a sleep boost.

What else can going nude at night do for you?

Burn calories: One U.S. study found that sleeping in a cold room activates brown fat, a type of tissues that protects us against weight gain by burning calories to keep us warm.

Lower blood pressure: If you share you bed with a partner, sleeping naked will generate a significant amount of oxytocin, a hormone linked to numerous health benefits. Triggered by closeness, specifically skin-to-skin contact, it helps protect the heart, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety and boost the immune system.

Boost your love life: In a survey of 1,000 British adults, research conducted by a bedsheet company revealed that 57% of nude sleepers were happy in their relationship, compared to 48% who slept in pajamas and 38% who snooze in a onesie. Sleeping nude can improve body issues, allowing you to be touched, as it increases the chances of intimacy.

Prevent infections:
For women, sleeping naked can help you avoid yeast infections, as those develop in warm, restricted environments.

So what are you waiting for? Follow your relaxing bedtime routine, including activities like stretching, drinking chamomile tea and taking a warm bath.
