How did you sleep over the past year? World Sleep Day is an annual day that celebrates and evaluates everything we’ve learned about sleep. Sleep-related issues including social aspects, driving, medicine, and education are all brought to the forefront of the discussion to decide what actions need to be taken next. The goal is prevent sleep issues in societies all over the world and teach others how to better manage their sleep disorders.
Organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), this year’s slogan is “Restful Sleep, Easy Breathing, Healthy Body.” Restful sleep is a part of the pillars of health, which includes diet and exercise. Your sleep should be of restful duration, without interruptions, and should be deep enough to contain for restorative properties. Your breathing is automatically done while you sleep; if there are pauses, it is a signal to see your physician. By making sure that your restful sleep is effective and free of breaking problems, you are on your way to maintaining a healthy body.
Sleep issues have become a global epidemic that pose threats to the health and quality of life of 45% of the world’s population. We know that a lack of sleep increases serious health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and even early death.
You can find historical videos, educational materials, and public service announcements online today at www.worldsleepday.org, as 50 national delegations all come together with local organizations to bring awareness of the value of sleep.
You are asked to be involved by making sleep the topic of conversation even if you aren’t able to start your own delegation. How often do you ask other how they have slept? Today is the day to share tips, facts and encouragement with others for better health, happiness, productivity and longevity!
