Beautiful summer weather is right around the corner, and we’re just as excited about it as you are! Unfortunately, with longer days and yummy barbeques comes humidity. Often times high moisture levels in the air make getting, and staying asleep more difficult. Air conditioners work wonders in cooling down small rooms. However, they’re not always practical. But have no fear, Sleep Center has some tips to help you get the best rest during the summer:
• Use an electric fan to cool yourself down. By lowering your overall body temperature, a fan can help you get to doze off more quickly, and stay asleep for longer.
• Substitute that afternoon cup of coffee or soda with a few glasses of water. Dehydration can cause an irritated throat, and ultimately lead to us waking up at night. By not drinking caffeine late in the day, your mind will be less stimulated around bedtime; allowing you to drift off into sleep.
• Keep your curtains or blinds closed during the day. This will keep your bedroom cooler throughout the day, and nighttime, by blocking out sunlight. If possible, cracking open a window or two prior to snuggling up is also recommended.
• Avoid nightcaps or alcoholic beverages in close proximity to bedtime. While they may help you get to sleep more quickly, alcohol is naturally dehydrating, and does not promote good, deep sleep.
Hopefully these tricks combine with your personal touch will contribute to better quality sleep this summer for you and your loved ones.
