While two-thirds of Americans admit that they don’t get enough sleep, a tiny fraction of people are thriving without it. These super sleepers can naturally function at a high level on less than 6 hours of sleep, while the rest of us don’t resemble our normal selves without 7-9 hours.
Many people claim to be a part of this group of naturally short sleepers, but the truth is most people are simply sleep-deprived. Only 1-3% of people are naturally short sleepers thanks to a genetic mutation.
These super sleepers have a different circadian rhythm, a higher tolerance for physical and psychological pain, and are more optimistic and upbeat. Sleep deprivation is linked to weight gain and diabetes, but super sleepers tend to have a high metabolism.
While it doesn’t seem fair that super sleepers exist and have more energy than the rest of us, take comfort that it is only small amount of the population. Only 20 had been identified in 2011.
To find out if you are among the elite, on your next off day turn off your alarm for the morning and see what time you naturally wake up. If you don’t wake up after 4-5 hours and feel energized and ready to start the day, it’s okay to be like the rest of us who require more sleep!
