Most are familiar with the age old “nightcap,” drinking a modest alcoholic beverage in an effort to get to sleep – and stay asleep – more quickly. However, this is not entirely true. While for some, alcohol helps them ease into sleep more quickly; it has adverse affects on the quality of sleep one gets.
British researchers found that alcohol consumption prior to retiring for the night decreased rapid eye movement or REM sleep. They conducted their research by reviewing, and analyzing all studies that had been done concerning the relationship between drinking alcohol and sleep. REM sleep is associated with a healthy memory, and keeping us energized, amongst other things.
