A new study is further confirming how dangerous insomnia is to our health. Insomnia is linked with a wide variety of health problems, including anxiety, osteoporosis, and heart attack.
Data from the Nord-Trondelag Health Studies conducted between 1995-1997 and 2006-2008 that included 24,715 working people, were examined by researchers from Norway and Finland. The results concluded that insomnia was a significant risk factor for numerous health issues over the 11-year period.
Insomnia was linked with a higher risk for depression, headaches, anxiety, whiplash, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, arthrosis (an age-related cartilage degeneration condition), asthma, heart attack and osteoporosis.
Researchers believe that the reason there may be a link to heart attacks is due the fact that sleep problems raise the stress response of the body, which has a negative impact on heart function.
The researchers concluded that insomnia is a predictor of the cumulative incidence of several physical and mental health conditions. The results are significant for its possible clinical implications, and in proving whether or not the treatment of insomnia can prevent both mental and physical conditions should continue to be studied.
There is no way around not sleeping. Your body needs it. A 2010 study showed that chronic insomnia raised the death risk four times among men over a 14-year period. Always get sleep issues taken care of as soon as possible. Don’t take chances with your health, the consequences are too high.
