Waking up after a rough night of sleep is bound to put us in a bad mood the next morning, especially when it’s due to back pain. Here are some things you can try to increase your quality of sleep and get some relief:
Take a shower after dinner: A hot shower or bath can help relieve some of the muscle tension caused by stress. Take some time massaging tension areas such as your neck and shoulders underneath soothing water.
Try some yoga before bed: Lower back pain can be caused by tight hips, hamstrings, abs, and back muscles. Yoga is a nice relaxing way to hit those target areas.
Evaluate your sleep position: People who sleep on their side or stomach often times suffer more back pain during sleep, or wake up in pain. When sleeping on your stomach, your spine isn’t being supported causing it to arch toward the floor and compress your lower vertebrae. It advised that you avoid this position but if it is a must, reduce discomfort by placing a pillow underneath your pelvis. Use a flat pillow underneath your head to avoid neck and back strain.
When sleeping on your side, the knee and thigh tends to slide forward, twisting your spine. To prevent your spine twisting in one direction, place a pillow between your knees.
The best sleep position is to sleep on your back. To further help keep the spine in a neutral position, sleep on your back with pillows under your knees.
Check your mattress: If your mattress is two-sided, give it a flip. If its been more than 10 years, it’s definitely time to invest a new mattress. You spend more than 55 hours on a mattress, opt for a higher quality, your body will thank you for it. Try a firmer model that won’t sag under your body weight.
Be mindful of your health: Shedding a few pounds could be the answer to your back problems at night. The extra pounds place unnecessary pressure on your spine, especially if the extra weight is carried in your belly. Eating right and exercising daily will not only bring you better sleep results but, regular exercise can reduce muscle tightness and reduce inflammation.
Get strong: Toning your core can reduce pain caused by weakness as well as strain from muscular imbalances
