A new study suggests that many of the physical symptoms of FGID’s are related to sleep deprivation caused by the disorders.
In the study, nearly 45% of 283 children were found to have some sort of sleep disorder. No difference could be noted between FGID or sex, although younger children tended to be disrupted during the night, while adolescents had this problem as well as trouble falling asleep. Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, or FGID’s, are any number of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, and can affect anyone, including children and adolescents. They are known to cause pain, discomfort, anxiety, and emotional unrest.
Sleep problems are very common with this type of patient due to the nature of the disorder. Treatment placing value on sleep quality would be found to be beneficial to the well-being and comfort of the patients.
