Sleep is finally getting the public attention it deserves thanks to a new partnership. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, have teamed to bring awareness to the health risks associated with insufficient sleep, sleep disorders and drowsy driving.
About 30% of adults in the U.S. are not getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night. The partnership is aiming to bring sleep into the general conversation to match the amount of attention exercising and nutrition receives.
The project will receive $1 million in funding from the CDC and will last for 5 years. The specific interventions to be used in reaching the general public haven’t been worked out yet but, the project will identify key partners at local and state levels, such as sleep societies and health care systems to help promote the importance of sleep.
